Drywood Termites live in dry, sound wood and derive their moisture requirements from the wood they consume.  They construct large, irregular galleries that run across and with the wood grain, with a very smooth, clean and sand-paper-like appearance.  The galleries are connected by small openings large enough for a single termite to pass through.  Each year termites damage approximately 2 million homes in the United States.

As social insects, Drywood Termites live in colonies consisting of male and female swarmers, soldiers, and workers.  The male and female swarmers are responsible for reproduction and they will leave the existing colony to start new ones.  Once the swarmers find a small hole in wood, they will break off their wings, seal the hole and start to mate.

The majority of the offspring comprise the worker (nymph) caste and are responsible for tending the young, and searching for food (meaning the wood in your home).   Some offspring become soldiers, which protect the colony from other insects.   Other offspring will mature into reproductive adults and will eventually form new colonies of their own.  It is possible to have more than one colony in your home.

You can detect Drywood Termite infestations in various ways.    One of the most common ways to detect Drywood termites is the pellets of partly digested wood found beneath an infested area.  The pellets are cream to reddish-brown or black in color and are usually about 1-2 mm long.   The termites eject these pellets from the galleries via ‘kick-out’ holes, often found right below the damaged wood.  Surface blisters and hollow sounding wood are signs of advanced infestation.

Drywood termites usually swarm in early spring and as they are attracted to light, will be most noticeable at night.  Wings broken off after swarming may be found on windowsills Swarming indicates an advanced infestation in the home and increases the possibility of multiple colonies within the structure.

Drywood Termite Treatments

Why Choose Fumigation?

Structural fumigation, when performed correctly, is the only 100% proven way to eliminate Drywood termite colonies in any building. Pestguard uses sulfuryl fluoride Fumigant, manufactured by Dow AgroSciences and Ensystex.  Sulfuryl fluoride has been trusted for over 40 years and in more than 2 million homes as the fumigant of choice for Drywood termites and other wood destroying organism such as various types of beetles.

The structure must be vacated during the procedure.  Pestguard uses the standard three day procedure in which the building is wrapped in tarps and the fumigant is released into the structure on the first day; the building is aerated on the second day and cleared for re-entry the third day.  Under special circumstances, we have completed successful fumigations in less than 24 hours

Fumigation

Spot Treatment

Pestguard  prides itself on a re-treatment rate of 0.003% over the last 12 years.  (We average approximately 4000 fumigations per year.)

Average re-treatment rate is 50% in the first year alone.  It is known in the pest control industry as a “pre-tent” treatment

Treatment is completed in a three-day period

Additional treatments are almost always needed.

Fumigation reaches every nook and cranny of a structure, penetrating into the pores of the wood to reach the air the termites breathe.

The spot treatments do not penetrate into wood that has been sealed or painted.   As the name suggests, these treatments are localized and only effect the initial area.  Drilling into the walls of the structure multiple times is required to perform the treatment.

The Fumigation process can be broken down into 5 steps; sealing the structure, fumigation, aeration, and clearing the site.

Step # 1 - Preparation

  • After discussing any special concerns with the Pestguard representative, the crew leader starts the paper trail by notifying the Pestguard office work is about to begin.
  • Inspections are made to identify any areas of concern around the structure and on the roof
  • The crew leader will inspect the interior of the structure to confirm preparations
  • Introduction fans are set up inside the structure.
  • Secondary locks are installed on all entrance doors and warning signs  printed in English and Spanish are posted

Step # 2 - Sealing the Structure

  • Large tarps are carried to the roof and opened.
  • Roof and down seams are sealed tightly with clips.
  • Ground seal overlapped by at least 1/3.
  • Warning agent introduced.

Step # 3 - Fumigation

  • Crew leader uses a sulfuryl fluoride calculator and cubic feet measurements to determine proper dosage and notifies the office of the necessary information.
  • Fumigant is released into the structure.
  • Crew member uses TIF detector to make sure there are no leaks.
  • Fumigant reading are taken 1 hour after introduction of the fumigant and again on day two.

Step # 4 - Aeration

  • Once proper ounce hours are achieved ( calculation of fumigant dosage and exposure time ), the crew can take the “tent” down and aeration can begin.
  • Office is notified of active aeration start for the fumigation log.
  • All operable doors and windows are opened and fans are used to speed up the aeration.
  • After approximately 1  hour, windows and doors are secured.

Step # 5 - Clearing

  • On day three, the crew leader arrives to clear the job.
  • Secondary locks are removed and sulfuryl fluoride gas levels are tested in numerous place throughout the structure.
  • A structure cannot be cleared until gas levels are less than 5 parts/million.
  • Crew leader will inspect around the structure and the roof for any materials left behind or  any possible damage.
  • Warning agent notice is left in plain view for the owner.
  • Warning signs are removed and clearance notices are posted on all exterior doors.
